The Next New Thing

As shown by the articles of this week, there are so many different ways that new media is being used to help the handicapped to helping the people prove their innocence in a case, to using their thoughts to move a cursor for a paralyzed man. That last concept was the most interesting article to me as it mentions "If your bran can do it, we can tap into it" making me curious about bringing it more into the real world in the way of having your thoughts broadcasted wider. Our society is big on keeping our real thoughts to ourselves and saying only what society wants to hear. I wonder if there is a way to tap into our brains to display this somehow, in like a mood ring type of way. Maybe something like what makes the cursor move for the handicapped man can display our moods of what we're thinking. With how society loves to delve deeper and deeper into the lives of people around them, I would not be surprised that they would like to know more about the moods of what's really going on inside their friends or the people around, for a more honest society.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

My contribution to our class Wiki will be to add a little of something to each Wiki subject as I'm noticing there are a lot of subjects without much, if any, information on them. I will start by first reviewing how to navigate through the pages first and then once I get a hang of what to do, hopefully I'll be able to update the different subjects from there.

P2P File Sharing

What is file sharing? When files are shared digitally. The files can be movies, music, books, any assortment of things. And they can be shared in any method of ways from usbs to computer networks, to the web, to emails. What is P2P File sharing? Peer to peer is a specific type of file sharing, where average people share online files so that other average people can have it. It's invention has paved a way in giving people easy and free access to things that would normally cost. In the article called "Digital Pirates Winning Battle with Studios" in the New York Times, it mentions that the Batman movie was downloaded more than 7 million times. This method of file sharing is great for the affordable and access for the user, but the film companies and music companies themselves are finding they are losing millions of dollars. In the article, "Should Online Scofflaws Be Denied Web Access", in the New York Times, it mentions the entertainment industry losing 20 billion a year in sales because of P2P file sharing. What are some examples of P2P file sharing? Napster, BitTorrent, Kazaa

Privacy & Confidentiality

The issues of privacy and confidentiality related to new media is that average users aren't aware of how technology works and will start posting things which they were hoping only their friends would read only to find out later that the whole world can read it.

Advice to Baruch College

If Baruch hired me to give them new media advice to improve the college, I would tell them that's a great idea! I would advise them to have more of a Facebook presence to interact with students. I would have events posted on Facebook. I would have them put some videos on YouTube of some of their classes. I think constant updates to Social Media pages would really help in having the students connect more.

Creativity and New Media

My thought is that creativity is something people don't normally see.  As I sit in my room, the only thing I can think of that people don't normally see is the little baby fish I was eating, so I figured I'd make art with it and videotape it.  Most people see the little fish as gross, ugly little things, but maybe by my making it into a pretty piece of art, they would look more lovely...  Enjoy!

Creativity

In the article Twitter Serves Up Ideas From It's Followers, it shows a great example of how New Media fosters creativity.  It mentions that a lot of how Twitter is what it is now is because of the creativity of it's users, who invent creative ways to use the site to get it to do what they want for their needs.

Being creative means you get a chance to express yourself and show who you are and new media has many ways that allow you to do that with the personalization of your pages and layouts and what you want to display and how you want it displayed.

Then you get to be creative in a daily basis too when you're doing blogs and deciding what you want to say and you would want to be as creative and interesting as possible to be sure to keep your audience.

Also if you have creative interests in other areas of your life, new media allows you to not only showcase that interest, but also allows you to be creative in other ways regarding that as well, for instance if you're a ballerina, you can now blog about being a ballerina.
